The giveaways will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the former Downtown Foods location in Jasper. Signups for the giveaways were held throughout November, and families must be registered to receive the toys and shoe vouchers. The person picking up the items must be the person who registered for the giveaways or have a letter from the person who registered. Those picking up should also have a photo identification, their social security card, each of their children’s social security cards and a proof of address.
Nearly 500 families and almost 1,000 children will benefit from the giveaways, thanks to donations from area businesses and community members.
“We at the Daily Mountain Eagle are humbled to be able to help these families have a brighter holiday season. Accolades go out to everyone that donated to the annual Shoe Fund. It is such a worthwhile occasion,” said Publisher Jack McNeely. “And, my hat's off to all the volunteers who are working day and night this week to make this Saturday's giveaway such a meaningful event here in Jasper and Walker County.”
While the giveaways begin at 8 a.m., those who have registered have until noon to pick up their items. Items will not be available for pickup after noon on Saturday.
Volunteers were still purchasing toys for the giveaway earlier this week and have worked the last two nights on bagging items to have them ready for the giveaway.
Fred Nixon, a co-chair for Share-A-Toy of Walker County, said there is a lot of hard work that goes into the giveaways.
“This is a big undertaking every year,” he said. “It’s all worth it, to know that we are helping children and families here in Walker County. All that hard work is definitely worth it.”
