Verlon Charles “Paw-Paw” Watkins, 78, of Jasper, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 7, 2012 at Baptist Medical Center Princeton.

He was better known as “Paw-Paw” and owner of Hickory Land BBQ. He was a member of the Elks Club of Jasper and the United Mine Workers of America. He served our country in the United States Army. Paw-Paw’s legacy is a wonder for all times. He had a magnetic personality and never met a stranger. He loved to laugh, dance and sing. He was known to hum for hours and Alabama football was his passion. Paw-Paw was one amazing individual, and, after him giving his life to Jesus Christ. Heaven will be blessed.

Visitation will be today, Dec. 9, 2012 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Collins-Burke Funeral Home Parlor. The funeral will be Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the Collins-Burke Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Walker Memory Gardens.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Charles Watkins; mother, Dellar Mae Peak Watkins; brothers, Melvin Watkins and Travis Watkins; sisters, Lorene Case, Hazel Palmer and Marvelene Fannie; and brother-in-law, Terry Walker.

He is survived by his wife, Myra Vintson Watkins; daughters, Rhonda Jean Pope (David), Rhonda Cornelius (Jr.) and Tonja Strickland (Larry); sister, Willie Mae Walker; grandchildren, David Stamper, Angel Snipes, Phillip Pope, Becky Pope, Stacy Pope, Chasitce Dutton (John Ross) and Greg Tirey; and great-grandchildren, Ryan Stamper, Christopher Pope, Jeremy Whittey, Alexis Whittey, Cameron Pope, Dylan Martin, Anna Dutton and Davis Dutton.
