An altercation between two Winston County men Thursday night ended in murder.

Winston County authorities announced that 54-year-old Varney Ray Calloway of 5777 Winston County Road 40 in the Helican community near Arley was taken into custody early Friday morning and charged with murder in connection with the death of Jackie Ray Wright, 60, of 7427 Winston County Road 39 in Addison.

Winston County Sheriff Rick Harris said his office received a call around 8:30 p.m. Thursday about an encounter that reportedly took place between the two men.

“The incident reportedly occurred next to a pickup truck in the roadway in the 6000 block of County Road 40,” Harris said. “When deputies arrived on the scene, they found a pickup truck and there were some obvious signs a struggle had occurred, but there was no one around.”

After conducting interviews with several people in the area, officials with the Winston County Sheriff’s Office, Winston County District Attorney’s Office, the Arley Police Department and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation obtained information around daybreak Friday morning which led them to Calloway, and later, to the location of Wright’s body.

“After interviewing the suspect, we learned the location of the victim,” Harris said. “We discovered his body down a logging road about a half-mile off County Road 40. This is still an ongoing investigation.”

Calloway is currently being held in the Winston County Jail.

No bond has been set.
