Jimmy Gay is headed back home.

Gay has been named the new head football coach at Cordova High School.

The move was made official at the Walker County Board of Education meeting on Thursday.

“I grew up in Cordova. I played football there. It’s always been a special place for me. That’s the big reason I wanted to go back there,” Gay said.

Gay is a 1990 Cordova High School graduate. He has spent the last six years as the offensive line coach at Walker High School under head coach John Holladay. His previous head coaching experience came at Parrish High School in 2003-04. He led the Tornadoes to the 1A championship in 2003 and was named 1A Coach of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

Gay finished his two-year stint at Parrish with a 21-4 record.

Gay, who also spent time as an assistant coach at Dora, played his collegiate football at UNA. He graduated from the school in 1995.

At Cordova, Gay replaces coach Woody Smothers who stepped down in November after two years at the helm.

The Blue Devils started the 2012 campaign with a 0-6 record before getting hot toward the end of the season, winning three of their last four games, including a 42-28 win over county rival Curry in the season finale.

Despite the strong finish, Cordova missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2004 season — the same year Gay led the Tornadoes to a 28-8 victory over Cordova.

“The expectations are always high (at Cordova). It is a tight-knit community that values family and always comes out and supports the football team. It’s a very unique place,” said Gay.

He learned that he had got the job on Wednesday.

“I was excited. I believe Cordova is a place where a person can come in and make a tremendous impact on the community. It’s a great place and it’s a golden opportunity for me,” Gay said. “I’m on pins and needles. I can’t wait to get started and get this thing kicked off.”

Cordova competes in Class 3A, Region 7. Last season Hamilton won the region title followed by: Hanceville, Vinemont and Winston County. Danville, Good Hope and Winfield are also in the region.

All four teams region playoff teams lost in the first round of the postseason. The region was one of five in the state to have every playoff team lose in the opening round.
