Local singles are ready to prove that the best things don’t come in pairs on Singles Awareness Day, otherwise known as Valentine’s Day.

The Highlands on 4th will be hosting the area’s first “Happy SAD party” on Thursday, Feb. 14 beginning at 6:45 p.m. Reservations are required for the event, which will include an Italian dinner, drinks and dessert as well as entertainment and door prizes.

Co-organizer Jennifer Smith said confirmed bachelors and bachelorettes, widows, widowers and divorcees are all invited to come celebrate their singlehood.

“What better night to get us all together than a night when everybody else who is part of a couple is going out?” Smith said.

Smith, who was widowed in February 2006, can still recall the pain of those first Valentine’s Days alone. However, she could always count on a laugh after a good friend started sending her “Happy Singles Awareness Day” texts.

After being elected to the Jasper City Council in October, Smith began noticing a need for more local events, particularly for singles.

“There are more single people here than I realized. When I got to talking to them, I found out they were going to Birmingham and other places to have fun. Why? Let’s keep them here,” Smith said.

Smith’s vision is to provide an opportunity for singles to connect with old friends and make new ones. The emphasis will be on networking rather than matchmaking.

The virtual invitation for the SAD party is targeted toward those who are “single and loving it.”

“We joked that we don’t have to worry about buying candy and flowers or expensive meals for two. We can just get together,” Smith said.

Smith hopes the SAD party can serve as a kickoff for more fun events. A short brainstorming session called “Unlock Our Possibilities” will take place during the dinner party.

The cost to attend is $20. For reservations, call 221-0343 or 717-5683.
