The USGS reported a 2.7-magnitude quake, with its epicenter about 7 miles south of Jasper and 6 miles west-southwest of Cordova, took place at 10:53 a.m.
The USGS has its depth reported at 4 kilometers, or about 2.5 miles.
According to the Jasper and Cordova police departments, there were no reports of damage associated with the quake.
Two similar-sized earthquake’s were recorded in nearby areas last year. A magnitude 2.9 quake hit in the Townley community in January 2012 and a smaller quake hit near Parrish and Cordova in November.
According to the USGS, an earthquake with a magnitude of 2 to 3 can be felt slightly for several miles.
The Geological Survey website said earthquakes east of the Rocky Mountains are less frequent than in the West but are typically felt over a much broader region. The group said a magnitude 4.0 eastern U.S. earthquake can be felt at many places as far as 60 miles from where it occurred, and it infrequently causes damage near its source.
