Don Goetz, retail recruiter for the city, is also leading an effort to bring more traffic to the downtown area. The yard sale is the first of more than 60 events scheduled downtown for the remainder of the year. Goetz said streets around the courthouse will be closed, and area citizens will be allowed to set up merchandise to sell from 9 a.m to 3 p.m..
“This is open to anyone who is interested,” he said. “We’re not quite sure how the turnout will be since this is our first event, but we anticipate it will grow throughout the year.”
Goetz said he thinks Saturday will be the perfect day to hold a yard sale.
“It’s supposed to be in the upper 60s and clear — that’s about as good as it gets,” he said.
There are 25 spots around the courthouse available. To register for the free spots, contact Jenny Sayles at 205-221-8529.
The Salvation Army has also volunteered to pick up any items left over if residents don’t want to carry them back home. Goetz said the yard sale will be a monthly event.
