Cancer is more than just another cause for Deana Peek and LaShae Perry, organizers of this weekend’s “Zumbathon for the Cure.”

Perry has lost several family members to the disease, and her father is currently undergoing treatment for cancer of the stomach, liver and lung.

She found a perfect partner for her Relay for Life fundraising idea in Peek, owner of Inspire Fitness.

“My dad is currently undergoing chemo and radiation for chronic lymphocytic leukemia. So, this is dear to my heart,” Peek said.

Six instructors will be involved in the Zumbathon, which will be held Saturday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Swann Gym in Jasper.

There will also be a wall for participants to sign in honor or memory of friends and loved ones diagnosed with cancer.

Although the Zumba Fitness corporation only requires 75 percent of proceeds to go to a charity, Peek said all of the money raised Saturday will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. “This event is open to everyone — even those that claim to ‘have two left feet.’ The goal is to raise money, awareness and have fun,” Peek said.
