Relay for Life benefits the American Cancer Society. There are currently 42 teams signed up for the Jasper event, and the fundraiser goal for this year is $121,000. Last year, the Jasper Relay raised $106,000.
Rachel Simmons, a local Relay coordinator, said the goal is lofty, but she feels the group can reach it.
“We are all working hard,” she said. “There is a lot of excitement about Relay this year.”
Relay for Life of Walker County-Jasper is hosting its annual yard sale Saturday in the parking lot next to Discount Home Center on Highway 78 in Jasper. The yard sale will begin at 7 a.m. and will feature items from 15 local Relay teams.
“Our teams will be offering lots of treasures and food, and we will also have fun for the children,” Simmons said. “Please come out and support this great cause and take some bargains home.”
Relay organizers have also planned a new fundraiser for 2013 called Dancing with the Stars of HOPE. The event will be a dancing competition and feature several local “stars.” It is scheduled for Saturday, April 20, at 6 p.m. inside the Walker High School auditorium.
Dancers include Dr. Ty Blackwell, Jeremiah Alexander, Jennifer Smith, Rachel Simmons, Al Blanton, Antwain Satterfield, Nick Key, Kim Dunn, Leonard and Becky Rigsby, Logan Pace and Sarah Latham.
Each contestant must compose their own 5-minute routine and provide their own music. Judges will give several different awards. Contestants will be drawn at random. The Kool Kats Jazz Band will perform during intermissions.
“I’m excited about the Dancing with the Stars,” Simmons said. “We want it to be a local version of the television show. The show is such a hit that we thought this would be a popular fundraiser.”
Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the door or in advance at Dr. Drummond’s office in the Dental Arts Building, Victoria’s Gift Shop and Dr. Blackwell’s office.
All proceeds from the yard sale and the dancing event will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Walker County-Jasper.
