Walker boys win tennis section title, earn spot at state

Walker’s boys tennis team will join the girls at the state tournament.

The Vikings ran through the competition at the Class 5A, Section 5 Tournament on Wednesday, winning five singles titles and three doubles titles along the way.

Walker’s boys will play in the Class 5A State Tournament Monday and Tuesday at Decatur’s Almon Tennis Center, which is located in Point Mallard State Park.

On Wednesday, Walker took home first place while Demopolis placed second.

The top two teams from each of the state’s six section tournaments advance to Decatur.

Central-Tuscaloosa, Chilton County, McAdory, Paul Bryant, Pleasant Grove and Ramsay also played in the one-day tournament.

For Walker, singles winners were: No. 2 Colby Hopper, No. 3 Joseph Harris, No. 4 Mike Wiginton, No. 5 Rob Green and No. 6 Andrew Wiginton.

In doubles, Walker swept the competition. Winners were: the No.1 team of Luke McCullar and Green, the No. 2 team of Hopper and Mike Wiginton and the No. 3 team of Harris and Andrew Wiginton.

Since 1999, Walker has advanced to the state tournament every year with the exception of 2004, winning titles in 1999-2001, 2003, 2006-09 and 2010,
