The shelter is looking for supplies as well as volunteers to help improve the shelter and the conditions for the animals. The building and facilities at the location are old and the shelter’s need has long-ago outgrown the space, but volunteers are hoping to make the most of what they have.
“We will be doing some painting and scrubbing and just whatever needs to be done,” shelter manager Jennifer Bidwell said.
The makeover begins at 8 a.m. and volunteers are encouraged to wear work clothes and absolutely no open-toed shoes. They are also encouraged to bring paintbrushes or other supplies if they have them. The event will continue as long as there is work to be done or volunteers to help out.
Supplies needed by the shelter include wormer, 7 in 1 and 5 in 1 shots, collars, leashes, crates, flea medications, dog houses, litter boxes, towels, blankets, cleaning supplies, office supplies, food/water bowls, Walmart or Home Depot gift cards, tarps, Rubbermaid containers, dog shampoo, PVC pipe (1 1/4 inch), durable vinyl fabric, animal art and painting supplies. The shelter also always needs kitten and puppy food. Monetary donations to the shelter can be made out to the Walker County Animal Shelter or WCAS and dropped off or mailed to 2302 Birmingham Avenue, Jasper, AL 35501.
The shelter’s regular hours are 1 to 4 p.m. each Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
