Winfield eliminates Cordova from playoffs

WINFIELD — Tyler Griffin broke a tie with a single in the bottom of the seventh-inning as Winfield earned a 4-3 victory over Cordova in game 3 of their second-round playoff series on Saturday.

With the win, the Pirates took the series 2-1 and advanced to take on Plainview in next week's third round.

Winfield pushed across two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Cordova battled back.

The Blue Devils got on the scoreboard with a Hunter Gilmore home run over the left field fence in the second inning.

Cordova (27-11) took the lead in the third.

Zac Guerra reached on an infield single with one out to start the rally. Cam Honeycutt followed with a bloop single to centerfield.

After Stephen Kilpatrick loaded the bases with a walk, Andrew Minor smacked a single to left field to drive in Guerra with the tying run.

Jeffre Wingo drove in Honeycutt with a sacrifice fly for a 3-2 Cordova lead.

The score stayed the same until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Pirates tied the score 3-3.

Winfield scored the game-winning run after loading the bases with one out in the seventh inning.

The Pirates had 11 hits in the game, led by Griffin, who was 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs. Michael Jenkins was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Alex Smothers was 2 for 4 with a double while Jared Pollard, Nic Roberts, Mason Osborn, Jordan Williams and Hunter Addison added hits.

Smothers got the win for Winfield (28-9), pitching the final 2 1/3 innings. Hunt got the start and lasted 4 2/3 innings.

Gilmore started the game for Cordova and went five innings. Clark Chance went the final two innings and suffered the loss.

At the plate, Guerra was 2 for 4, both Gilmore and Wingo were 1 for 2 with an RBI, Minor was 1 for 3 with an RBI while Honeycutt and Kilpatrick were 1 for 3.

On Friday, Cordova won the first game of the series 9-0 while Winfield force a game 3 with a 5-4 victory.
