Applications available for vacant seat

During their meeting Thursday night, three members of the Carbon Hill City Council approved a motion that would allow the council to begin taking applications to fill a council seat left vacant earlier this month when District 5 Council member Chris Pschirer tendered his resignation from the city council.

Following a vote to formally accept Pschirer’s resignation, Carbon Hill City Council members, Terry Mason (District 3), Ken “Sarge” Blankensopp (District 4), and Jimbo Bray (District 6) approved motions to accept applications for the District 5 council seat until Thursday, May 16, at 4:30 p.m. and to hold a special called meeting of the Carbon Hill City Council that same day so council members can look over the applications and then vote to appoint one of the applicants to the now vacant seat.

“The people in District 5 are currently without representation on the council, and we need to do fix that,” Mayor James “Pee Wee” Richardson said. “This is the way the council voted to handle the situation, and like any regular council meeting the public is urged to attend this special called meeting as well.”

In other council business, the council also voted to purchase new software to safeguard the computers used in city hall and the laptops used by the Carbon Hill Police Department from viruses. They also voted to reinstall the phone service to the city’s community center at the request of Richardson.

The council was given a report on the police department by Carbon Hill Police Chief Ron Colburn who said the police department had conducted several roadblocks recently which resulted in a number of tickets being written for such things as no driver’s license, no insurance, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Colburn said the department had also made a total of 11 arrest for public intoxication, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, possession of drugs and unlawful use of a motor vehicle since the April 25 council meeting and taken a total of 38 incident reports.

“We have also been approved for a grant from the Fraternal Order of Police that will allow us to purchase new vest for all of our police officers,” Colburn said. “And we’ve are also in the process of applying for another grant which would provide the department with enough funding to allow us to provide a full-time resource officer at our schools.”

Shortly after the meeting was adjourned, Ronnie O’Rear approached the council bench and got into a heated discussion with Richardson regarding the upcoming Hillfest celebration, which ended with both sides yelling at each other before O’Rear finally left the council chamber.

Margie Miles and Shelia Pschirer approached the council bench and got into heated discussions with the mayor and the council members over the way the council was handling the application process for the District 5 Council Seat. This discussion got so heated that Richardson had to request the police be called backed to the community center to clear the building.
