Spencer Fikes birdied two of his last three holes and finished the opening day of the 42nd annual Pigeon Dove Junior Championship with a one-under par 70 on Monday at Musgrove Country Club.

Fikes, who graduated from Curry High School less than two weeks ago, holds a three-shot lead in the boys 16-19 division.

A pair of golfers in the 14-15 division are also in the mix. Austin Gean of Florence is tied with Fikes heading into today’s final round while Cody Maddox of Guin sits one stroke back after an even par 71.

Fikes, who signed to play golf at Point University (Ga.) last month, was one over par after nine holes, but birdied the 11th, 16th and 18th holes to finish under par.

Gean was two under par at the turn, but bogeyed both the 10th and 13th holes. He dropped under par thanks to a birdie on the 18th hole. Maddox eagled the 18th hole to pull within a stroke of Fikes and Gean.

In the 16-19 division, Dora’s Jacob Pair and Gadsden’s John Dawson are three strokes back of Fikes after opening-round 73s. Pair had four birdies on Monday, but was hurt by a triple bogey on the 16th hole. Dawson had four birdies and six bogeys to finish at two-over par.

Fikes, Pair and Dawson will tee off at 10:14 a.m. today.

Alex Norman of Clay sits in fourth place in the 16-19 division after an opening-round 75 while Barry Flannery of Muscle Shoals, Trent Stone of Fayetteville, Tenn., and Andrew Eakes of Ardmore, Tenn., are tied at 76. Walker High School golfer Matt Burnett is tied for 11th after shooting a 78. Cordova High School golfers Dustin Sanders and Brent Borden are each nine strokes back after shooting 79 on Monday.

Sanders, who won the Walker County Golf Tournament by seven strokes over both Fikes and Pair in April, struggled early on Monday. He double-bogeyed the first hole and also had a triple-bogey to go with three birdies. Borden started strong and was just one over par after nine holes before three double bogeys down the stretch pushed him down the leaderboard.

Gean and Maddox have made the 14-15 division a two-man race. Gauge Cornelius of Luverne is in third place, nine strokes back of Gean at 79.

Gean, Maddox and Luverne will tee off from the 10th hole at 9:20 a.m. today.

Sheffield’s Allen Michael Burnett leads the boys 12-13 division after shooting a 76 on Monday. Decatur’s Eli Denson is two strokes back. In the boys 11-and-under division, where golfers play nine holes each day, Dawson Garrett of Fort Payne shot a 43 on Monday and holds a one-stroke lead over Seth Rogers of Northport. Harrison Davis of Northport is three strokes back.

In the girls 15-19 division, Abby Vinson of Pinson leads the way after an opening-round of 80. Winfield golfer Jordan Clark, playing in the girls 14-and-under division, is tied for the lead.

Haleyville’s Jaci Hamrick is two strokes back followed by Kara Lankford of Oneonta sitting three strokes back. Vinson, Hamrick and Lankford tee off from the 10th hole at 9:50 a.m. today.
