An agenda item concerning contracts for a new Walker High School was tabled by the Jasper City Council during its meeting Tuesday morning.

The item was the consideration of adopting a resolution to allow Mayor Sonny Posey to enter into agreements for architectural and engineering services and project management services contracts as amended by the city.

The contracts had previously been approved by the Jasper City Board of Education in May. The board approved an architectural contract with Hoover-based Lathan Associates and a construction management contract with Birmingham-based Hoar Construction.

With funding for the project coming from the city’s recent sales tax increase, the council will also approve contracts associated with the project.

Mayor Sonny Posey said the contracts were not ready for Tuesday’s meeting, which is why the vote was tabled.

“They’re just not quite ready,” he said. “Hopefully they will be for the next meeting.”

According to Tuesday’s agenda, when the contracts are approved, the vote will also give approval to the mayor to sign the bond underwriting agreement for the new school upon execution of the amended architectural and project management contracts by the school board.

“We want to get this moving quickly, but we want it to be done correctly as well,” Posey said.

In other action:

•City Clerk Kathy Chambless introduced a consideration for funding for upgrades for sound and visual equipment for the council chamber.

•The council approved receiving funding from the Samuel Lee Smith Advised Fund for the Jasper Dream Team and the Jasper Police Explorers Program.

•State Rep. Bill Roberts (R-Jasper) presented Posey with two checks for the city. Roberts gave $1,000 for the George Lindsey Miracle Field and $1,483 for the Percy Goode Community Center.

“We thank you for the great job you are doing, and we will put this to good use,” Posey said.
