A long-time Daily Mountain Eagle newspaperman with nearly 25 years of award-winning experience has been promoted to lead the newsroom as managing editor, announces Editor and Publisher Jack McNeely.

Jasper native Ron Harris fills the vacancy left recently by outgoing editor James Phillips, who accepted a publisher’s position at a weekly newspaper in Mississippi.

“Ron has the experience, dedication and commitment to lead our editorial staff professionally into a new era,” said McNeely. “Our goal is to provide the best and most accurate local news and sports reporting for our readership family.”

Also, the search is under way for a qualified news editor to bolster the editorial team, said McNeely.

Harris began his DME career in November 1989 as an outside sales associate. It was not too long before he moved to the editorial department where he served in multiple news and sports capacities over the years.

His eye for layout and design then led him to the newspaper’s composition department, where he has brought consistency to the newspaper over the past decade.

Harris is also an exceptional photographer. He teaches a beginning photography class at both the Jasper and Sumiton campuses of Bevill State Community College. He has won numerous Alabama Press Association and Alabama Associated Press awards in photography and writing.

“I’m excited about the opportunity I’ve been given to lead the newsroom, and I’m committed to providing our readers the best news coverage we can possibly give them,” Harris said.

Harris and his wife, Jennifer, have four children, Laney, 16; Garrett, 14; and twins Olivia and Nathan, 10. They live in Jasper and are members of New Canaan Baptist Church.

“I have a vested interest in Jasper and Walker County and want to make sure we have the very best of everything, and that includes the newspaper we publish,” he said.
