Whether shutting down opponents on the mound or providing a clutch hit in critical situations, Culverson’s consistently strong play helped her team reach new heights as a program, as well as earning several prominent individual awards.
She is the Daily Mountain Eagle Elite Player of the Year.
Although Culverson shined in key moments throughout the regular season, it was the postseason that her leadership on the field stood out the most.
At the state tournament, Culverson mowed down the competition last month in Montgomery. She gave up just five runs in 28 1/3 innings of work, tossing a shutout over Kinston in the championship game, earning her the title of Most Valuable Player for the tournament. Culverson was also named the 1A Pitcher of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.
“She’s probably the best big-game pitcher I’ve ever had,” Parris coach Chris Harris said. “Every time I put her into a big game she showed up. Not to mention, she had 16 RBIs through the area, regional and state (tournaments). Every time we needed a big hit, she came through. I believe she had five hits with two outs and runners in scoring position. She’s probably the best big-time player I’ve seen. She has that mentality. She relishes the moment when it’s a big game.”
Culverson is joined on the Eagle Elite first team by teammates Savannah Jones, Makenze Morgan and Jamie Beth Hocutt. Tayler Winchester was selected on the second team. Four Curry Yellow Jacket players have also been named to the Eagle Elite team follow the program’s appearance at the state tournament.
Ashlee Swindle and Haleigh Lane were selected to the first team, while Kaylee Horton and Shauna Rowe was named to the second team.
Cordova’s Faith Sims earned a first team spot, while Hannah McLemore and Lindsey Gilbert were selected to the second team.
Sumiton Christian had four players selected after the Eagles competed at the state tournament. Kendall Beth Sides, Jenna Ergle and Katlyn Sides represent Sumiton Christian on the Elite first team, while Kendell Hamm earned a spot on the second team.
