Peace came to Delbert Handy Jr. on Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at his residence in Jasper. He suffered with cancer for nine months. Delbert was an employee of North River/Jim Walter Mines in Berry for 30 years. While working at the mines he received his Mine Forman Certificate and Electrical Card. He was a member of the Eldridge Church of Christ.

Handy graduated from Carbon Hill High School, and was in the process of signing with University of Alabama to play football when a knee injury altered his chances. Never getting to play for "The Bear" was his greatest regret.

He loved to fish and hunt. His favorite form of hunting was turkey hunting. He taught his daughter, Lindsey to call a turkey at a young age. Delbert and Lindsey won many trophies for turkey calling.

Handy was known to be a quiet, soft spoken and kind person. He learned these traits from studying Yoshi and Shotokan. He received a black belt in Yosheki and a brown belt in Shodakon. In his early years, he taught classes in both arts.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Delbert Handy Sr. and Ola Rutledge Handy; sister, Linda Birdyshaw; brother, Bobby Birdyshaw; father-in-law, O'Neil Baughn; sister-in-law, Connie Norris; and nephew, Jerome Norris.
