A new summer camp is being organized in Walker County for children and young adults with cerebral palsy or spina bifida.

Camp COOL (Children Overcoming Obstacles through Love) will be held July 28-31 for campers between the ages of 6 and 21. There is no fee to participate.

Local organizer Brittney Henson and her family are basing the program on a special needs camp in Florida. They became associated with the camp through Henson’s cousin, Ty Barth, who has cerebral palsy.

“It’s such a humbling and rewarding experience, and I wanted to bring the camp up here because there isn’t anything like it in this area,” Henson said.

Dotson Baptist Camp will host the inaugural Camp COOL, which is supported solely through donations.

Activities that week will include swimming, crafts, a talent show and daily devotions.

There will also be plenty of free time for campers to mingle with their peers.

“Because of the level of care required, they’re with mom and dad all of the time. We want this to be an opportunity for the parents to have three days to themselves and for the child to hang out with kids their age,” Henson said.

In addition to volunteer staff, a male and female nurse will be on-site at all times.

Also, a physical therapist and occupational therapist will be checking in throughout the week.

Henson is currently seeking youth between 15 and 18 years old to serve as counselors. Because of the special needs of the campers involved, two counselors will be required for each child.

“We’re willing to take up to 15 kids this year if we have the counselors to do it,” Henson said.

No previous experience working with special needs children is required. Medical professionals will lead a training session for counselors on Saturday, July 27, at Dotson Baptist Camp.

More adult volunteers are also needed, according to Henson.

Staff and counselors are being asked to pay a $35 fee to help sponsor the campers.
