The David Smothers era at Addison didn’t get off to a great start in 2012.

Addison got drubbed by both Ider and Ragland for just the Bulldogs’ second 0-2 start in the last 20 years.

Just about the time fans started to panic, Addison turned things around, reeling off seven straight wins and earning the school’s 25th playoff appearance in the last 28 years.

Despite an early playoff exit, expectations are high entering Smothers’ second season as the Bulldogs’ head coach. One change this year is the addition of David’s brother, former Cordova head coach Woody Smothers, to the staff.

Woody will serve as Addison’s offensive coordinator.

Addison will only play four home games this season due to an open date in Week 9.

The Bulldogs look for revenge in Week 1 in a non-region game against Ider. The Hornets make the trip to Addison for the season opener on Aug. 30. Ider won last year’s game 27-7.

The Bulldogs face their toughest region challenge in 1A, Region 6 with a trip to Ragland in Week 2. The Purple Devils won the region title last year and were undefeated before getting upset by Hubbertville in the opening round of the playoffs.

Ragland won last year’s meeting over Addison 36-7.

Starting with Week 3, Addison plays just one team that finished with a winning record last season.

The Bulldogs host Southeastern in Week 3. The Mustangs finished 0-9 last season, their first in AHSAA play. Addison crushed Southeastern 48-0 in 2012.

Addison hits the road to Shades Mountain Christian, a one-win team in 2012, in Week 4. The Bulldogs won 42-3 last season. Addison hosts Appalachian in Week 5. Appalachian lost 18-0 to the Bulldogs last year.

Addison makes the short trip to Meek in Week 5 for a region game. The Bulldogs lead the series 49-9 and have won the last 10 in a row, including a 28-0 victory last season.

Sumiton Christian travels to Addison in Week 7. The teams played for the first time last year with the Bulldogs earning a 47-7 victory.

Addison closes out region play in Week 8 with a key region game at Falkville. The teams battled for the second seed in the region last year with Addison earning a narrow 20-12 victory.

After an open date in Week 9, the Bulldogs travel to Winston County to close the regular season. Addison has won 10 of the last 12 and three in a row in the rivalry series. The Bulldogs edged the Yellow Jackets 14-7 last year.

Addison’s regular-season opponents finished with a 36-51 overall record in 2012. The Bulldogs were outscored 63-14 in their first two games last year, but outscored their last seven regular-season opponents 217-29.
