The summer season is winding down and schools across the state are preparing for the return of students. In less than three weeks, Jasper City schools will open their doors early Monday, Aug. 19.

But before that much-anticipated date, each school will have its own orientation and/or registration.

Memorial Park, T.R. Simmons and West Jasper elementary schools and Maddox Middle School will hold orientations Thursday, Aug. 15.

The times scheduled for those schools are as follows:

•Memorial Park Elementary - Kindergarten, first and second grades are at 8:30 a.m.; third, fourth and fifth grades are at 10:30 a.m.

•T.R. Simmons Elementary - Kindergarten, first and second grades are at 8:30 a.m.; third, fourth and fifth grades at 10:30 a.m.

•West Jasper Elementary - Kindergarten, first and second grades are at 8:30 a.m.; third, fourth and fifth grades at 10:30 a.m.

•Maddox Middle School - Seventh and eighth grades are from 9 until 10:30 a.m. and sixth grade will be at 5 p.m.

Student registration for Walker High School is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 7, for sophomores, juniors and seniors, and again on Tuesday, Aug. 13, for freshmen.

The schedule is as follows:

•Freshmen - Aug. 13 from 9 until 11 a.m.

•Sophomores - Aug. 7 from 1:30 until 3 p.m.

•Juniors - Aug. 7 from 10:30 a.m. until noon

•Seniors - Aug. 7 from 8:30 until 10 a.m.

Jasper City schools Superintendent Robert Sparkman said student numbers are at the “traditional” level, with approximately 2,700 students district-wide. He said he feels that the system as a whole is prepared and ready for the students’ return.

“We make sure it’s not overcrowded. We tend to have a low student-teacher ratio,” Sparkman said. “Our administration, teachers and custodians have worked hard over the summer. We just have a few more things to do and a few more to hire.”
