A group of 25 men from across Walker County know there’s a need to help some parents get their kids what they must have to go back to school.

That’s where the G-Men of Walker County come in.

The G-Men (Godly Male Encouragement Needed) will be distributing school supplies to kids from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday at Jasper’s A.P. Howell Park.

“What we do is give away school supplies and have a little picnic with hot dogs and chips and drinks,” said Willie Moore, a member of G-Men. “We’ll have a speaker who will offer words of encouragement to the kids to hopefully give them a little initiative in going back to school. And we’ll have a lot of fun.”

This is the third year for the organization to host a back-to-school rally, Moore said. “It’s gone really well, even though last year we didn’t have as many kids come out as we would have liked,” he said.

Last year, the group had school supplies left over and donated them to area schools. “We just gave them to schools that we felt like could use them the most,” Moore said.

This year, Moore said they’re preparing for about 250 kids to attend the back-to-school rally.

In order to host the back-to-school rally each year, members of G-Men donate most of the money themselves. “If we see a need, we just go into our pockets and find a way,” Moore said. “The Lord has blessed us to be able to do that.”
