A fire, that may have been caused by lightning, destroyed Jasper’s First Church of the Nazarene Friday night. Firefighters were dispatched at approximately 7 p.m. to the church, which was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. Church officials posted on the Jasper First Nazarene’s Facebook page late Friday that services will be held Sunday in the Family Life Center adjacent to the church.

The church was previously destroyed by fire on Jan. 20, 1996, when a faulty heating unit caused a blaze that leveled the building. A year later, members attended services in a newly rebuilt sanctuary.

On Friday, the fire began shortly after strong thunderstorms passed through Jasper, leading many to speculate that lightning caused the fire. “It was pretty hard to stand there and watch it burn,” said Jasper City Council member Jed Daniel, who’s been a member at the church for the past 15 years.
