And that was just the beginning.
The Bulldogs’ talented backfield rushed for five touchdowns and cruised after the first quarter for a 50-6 win over Cordova in the 90th meeting between the rivals.
Top returning running back DeMarcus Kirk broke loose for a 30-yard touchdown run on the Bulldogs’ third play from scrimmage. He added a 15-yard score in the second quarter and finished with 150 yards on 10 carries on the night.
Walker transfers Quadrekas and Sa’Darius Key also did their part. Sa’Darius connected with Quadrekas for a 69-yard touchdown passes. Sa’Darius added a pair of touchdown runs as Dora beat the Blue Devils for the third straight season. Dora has outscored Cordova 140-20 over that span.
:We scored 50 points, but we made so many mistakes offensively — I don’t know how pleased I can be in our performance other than the fact that we won the game,: Dora coach Johnny Wright said. :Even my guys in the dressing room said, ‘Coach, we’re going to get better.’ I think we will get better as the season progresses, but there’s a lot of stuff we need to improve on both offense and defense. We’ve got a big game next week with Calera and we’re going to have to be ready for a challenge.:
Eighth-ranked Dora opens region play next week against No. 3 Calera in a game that could go a long way in deciding the region championship.
Calera opens the season against Holt on Friday.
After holding Cordova to a 3-and-out to start the game, Dora went to work quickly. Following a pair of short gains, Kirk went around the left side for a 30-yard touchdown run. Jack Spradlin, who went 5-for-7 on extra points, made the score 7-0 at the 8:40 mark of the first quarter.
Cordova’s wild snap on a punt attempt cost the Blue Devils’ 32 yards and set up Dora’s next possession. On the next play, Steven Gosha hit a wide open Kenton Petties in the end zone on a 25-yard touchdown strike for a 14-0 lead with 6:52 remaining in the quarter. A series of penalties kept Dora out of the end zone on its third possession. A Kirk 32-yard touchdown run was negated on the drive.
Dora bounced back to end the quarter with a bang courtesy Quadrekas Key, who bolted down the sideline for a 65-yard touchdown reception from Gosha for a 21-0 lead with 28.2 seconds left in the quarter.
Cordova’s highlight on the night came on Taj Woods’ 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. The run was set up by 42- and 24-yard runs by Charles Woods. The extra point missed the mark, leaving Dora up 21-6.
Two plays later Dora struck back with Sa’Darius Key hitting Quadrekas Key for a 69-yard touchdown. He fought off one defender and went the final 30 yard untouched as Dora pushed its lead to 27-6 with 8:54 left in the half. Dora closed out the first-half scoring with a five-play, 50-yard drive that ended with Kirk going into the end zone from 15 yards out. Dora led 34-6 at the break.
Dora added two scores in the third quarter.
The first came after a time-consuming nine-play, 65-yard drive that ended on Spradlin’s 27-yard field goal with 6:37 left in the quarter.
Jacob Twilley added a touchdown late in the quarter on a 3-yard run to cap a five-play, 42-yard drive at the 2:40 mark of the third quarter.
Sa’Darius Key added the last score on a 24-yard run early in the fourth quarter for the 50-6 final.
The 50 points was the third highest total for a winning team in the series. Dora won the 1993 game 62-0 and the 2003 game 51-29.
For Dora, Gosha finished 3-for-5 passing for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Sa’Darius Key was 1-for-1 with 69 yards and a touchdown pass while rushing four times for 42 yards and a score.
:I would say that Key stepped up a little bit tonight, but at the same time Gosha also did some things well. If I had to start one of them in a game tomorrow, it would probably be Key — but there’s four days of practice coming up this week that could show us something different to make either guy stand out even more.:
Quadrekas Key hauled in two passes for 134 yards and two scores. Brantley Whitlow led the team defensively with eight tackles, including one for loss. For Cordova, Charles Woods had 105 yards on 17 attempts while Jaxon Adkins had 96 yards on 10 carries.
