DOUBLE SPRINGS — It was the story of two halves Friday night at Malcolm Blake Stadium as the Lynn Bears came back from a 20-point halftime deficit to beat the Winston County Yellow Jackets 47-38 in the season opener.

Lynn fumbled the ball away on the first drive of the game, allowing the Jackets to march down the field. Seth Blanton connected with Edward Lamp in the end zone in his first of five touchdown passes.

Winston County's next three drives lasted only one play each, as Blanton connected on big catch and run touchdown plays to Lamp for 76 yards and Cody Henderson for 64 and 68 yards each.

Lynn's only points of the first half came off of rushes from quarterback Brody Meeks, one from 12 yards out and another from the 1.

Winston County answered again, however, this time a reception by Tristan Ergle as he broke two tackles to get into the endzone, leaving the halftime score at 32-12.

The third quarter didn’t go so well for the Yellow Jackets as Blake Ward intercepted Blanton on the second play of the half. From the 16 yard line, Meeks hit Dylan Murner for the touchdown pass, cutting the lead to 14. The next Bears’ possession ended similarly with a catch and run 35 yard touchdown pass from Ben Cagle. The two point conversion brought it within 6.

The Yellow Jackets would again go one play for a touchdown, this time Andrew Brown catching Blanton's pass for 44 yards, the two point conversion failed. Winston County's defense had no answer for the passing game at this point, as Meeks connected with Ward again for a 22 yard touchdown pass, chipping away at the lead. With Blanton receiving attention on the sideline, junior quarterback Timber Blankenship went into the game for the Jackets, and was marching down the field until Garrett Cornelius recovered a Winston County fumble on the 33-yard line. Seven plays later, Lynn would take a 2-point lead with a 11-yard touchdown pass from Meeks to Chance Henson. The Yellow Jackets ensuing drive showed promise, but abruptly ended when Brown fumbled on the Lynn 25-yard line. With 4:14 left in the game, Meeks hit Jeremy Tittle wide open for a 41 yard touchdown to put it out of reach.

Seth Blanton went 13 of 16 for 283 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Backup Timber Blankenship went 6 of 9 for 39 yards and an interception. Cody Henderson led the way with 6 receptions for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns. For the Bears, Brody Meeks went 18 of 37 for 324 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions.

Both teams open region play next week as Winston County travels to Winfield and Lynn hosts Brilliant at home.
