During a council work session Friday, council members said David Clark, who has served as acting chief for Jasper since April, Lt. Dante Fields of the Jasper Fire Department and Scott Harbison, current chief of the Adamsville Fire Department, were named by the Jasper Civil Service Board as finalists for the job.
Council members said interviews for the finalists will be held during a council work session at noon on Monday, Sept. 16, and council members will vote on who to hire the following day at the council’s regular meeting. The work session where interviews will be held is open to the public.
Mayor Sonny Posey said each finalist for the job will address the council, followed by each council member asking the finalists two questions during the interview process.
Council president Gary Cowen said choosing a fire chief is an important step for the council.
“That’s one of our primary public safety divisions, and it’s very important that we make sure he has great knowledge in the art and skill of firefighting,” Cowen said, “and is able to be a good manager for the people under him.”
Cowen said the fire chief, after all, has lives depending on the job he does.
“You’ve got citizens’ lives — plus the firefighters’ lives — depending on the chief,” he said.
Clark has worked full time with the Jasper Fire Department for the past 18 years and volunteered with the department for five years prior to that.
Fields has worked as a Jasper firefighter for the past 14 years.
