One week into the high school football season and Oakman has already landed its highest ever ranking in the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll.

The Wildcats moved up three spots to No. 3 in Class 2A after edging the Parrish Tornadoes 29-28 in the season opener.

Oakman (1-0) benefitted from opening-week losses by Reeltown, Walter Wellborn and Fyffe.

Washington County moved up to the No. 1 spot followed by defending 2A champion Tanner, which also lost its season opener.

Oakman, which earned 210 votes, was only nine votes behind Tanner and two votes ahead of No. 4 Mobile Christian.

The Wildcats face No. 10 Lamar County (1-0) on the road this week in a game that could go a long way in determining the Class 2A, Region 4 championship.

In Class 4A, Dora remained at No. 8 following a 50-6 rout of rival Cordova in last week’s opener.

The top end of Class 4A saw a major overhaul with No. 1 UMS-Wright and No. 2 Oneonta both losing. Calera (1-0) is now the No. 1 team.

Dora has a chance to make a major move up the poll this week when the Bulldogs travel to Calera to take on the Eagles in a 4A, Region 4 showdown. The teams finished 1-2 in the region last season with Dora winning the region title.

In Class 1A, Addison (1-0) moved up one spot to No. 5 after a dominating 20-8 win over Ider on Friday.

Addison travels to Ragland this week in a key 1A, Region 6 matchup. Ragland won the region title last year with Addison taking second.

Two local teams received votes in 1A: Sumiton Christian (5) and Lynn (1).
