CORNER — The Corner Yellow Jackets took advantage of six West Blocton turnovers to open up Class 4A, Region 4 play in good form, beating the Tigers 42-6 on Friday at Corner Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets rolled up 402 yards of total offense, with 236 yards coming on the ground. Taylor Crawford led the Corner rushers with 100 yards on nine carries with three touchdowns. Christopher Huff had an impressive night at quarterback, completing 7 of 8 passes for 126 yards.

Corner’s defense also provided great play on the night, holding West Blocton to 223 yards and forcing six turnovers that were converted into two scores. Jake Averhart recorded nine tackles including a tackle for a loss to lead the team, while Jonathan Basset finished the game with seven tackles, a tackle for a loss and a fumble recovery.

Corner coach Zac Willis praised the effort of his offense and defense, noting his team’s improvement since the week one opener.

“We eliminated a lot of our mistakes from last week,” Willis said. “West Blocton had six turnovers, which ended up being a key in the game. We were able to capitalize on the mistakes that they made and they also had a few injuries tonight that kind of took them out of their gameplan. But defensively, I think we play about as good of a game than we could play.”

After holding the Tigers to negative yardage on the initial drive of the game, the Yellow Jackets struck quickly — with Landon Best scoring on a ten-yard run to complete a seven-play, 58 yard drive, giving Corner the 7-0 edge.

After an exchange of possessions that left West Blocton pinned on its own three-yard line, Jake Averhart tackled the Tigers’ Jason Vick in the endzone for a safety, extending the lead to 9-0.

A first-down interception by Dylan Adamson on the Tigers’ next series set up the Corner offense on the West Blocton 22-yard line.

One play later, Hunter Doppler took the ball the 22-yard length for the score to further the Yellow Jacket lead to 16-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Corner defense held West Blocton to a punt on the next series and took over at its own 28-yard line. The Yellow Jackets needed just four plays for their next score, with Crawford running 58 yards for the touchdown, bringing Corner lead to 22-0.

Following another exchange of possessions, Jackson Averhart forced a West Blocton fumble that was picked up by Kaven McPherson. Crawford found the endzone again one play later, taking the ball in from 20 yards out for a 29-0 Corner lead.

The Yellow Jackets added a final score before halftime thanks to a fumble recovery by Doppler. Deshay Averhart got the touchdown on a two-yard run to leave Corner in command at the half, 35-0.

The Tigers scored their only touchdown of the game on their first possession of the second half on a 21-yard run, cutting the lead to 35-6.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Yellow Jackets put the final points of the game on the scoreboard following a six-play, 41-yard drive — with Devne Daniel scoring on a two-yard run. Following the successful extra point kick, Corner reached the 42-6 final.

The Yellow Jackets (1-1, 1-0) stay in region play next week, traveling to No. 8 Dora (1-1, 0-1).
