By the time Dora was able to get anything going Friday night, it was too late in a 56-32 loss to the Calera in the Class 4A, Region 4 opener.
Dora lost leading rusher DeMarcus Kirk, a verbal UAB committment to an ankle injury in the second quarter. Kirk was taken off the field in an ambulance.
Calera’s first two drives ended with touchdown runs from Clark, one from 1 yard out and the other from 5. Dora prevented a third score and forced a fumble from Clark on the 2-yard line. The Bulldogs were not able to make anything happen, however, with the drive resulting in an interception at Dora’s 26-yard line. Two plays later, Clark hit Jordan Bishop for a 29 yard touchdown pass, bringing the score to 21-0.
The Eagle defense returned a Bulldog fumble for a score and Clark ran in a 40 yard touchdown score to make it 35-0. With less than 23 seconds left in the half, Dora was finally able to break through the Eagle defense as Ki’Juna Babbs ran in a 33-yard touchdown, but the missed extra point made it 35-6.
The first half saw Dora’s offense gain a total of 124 yards to the Eagles’ 298. The Bulldogs turned the ball over four times.
Dora had deferred until the second half, but the short kickoff was dropped and recovered by Trezman Harris of Calera. Clark again showed his speed, running 33 yards in five plays to get on the board with his fourth rushing touchdown.
As the Eagles began playing field position and running the clock, the Bulldogs were able to get some points on the board.Jacob Twilley scored from 21 yards out and Ki'Juna Babbs from 55 yards. Two face-mask penalties on Calera set up a 5-yard run by Taurus White. Finally, with 16 seconds left on the clock, White broke free on a 49-yard touchdown run to make the final score 56-32. Babbs led the Bulldog rushing attack with 114 yards and two touchdowns.
