Cordova junior Garrett Woods helped carry the Blue Devils to their first win of the season on Friday.

Woods rushed for a team-high 150 yards on 17 carries as the Blue Devils got into the win column, beating arch rival Parrish 54-20 at Hudson-Kirby Stadium.

Cordova held a narrow 21-20 halftime lead before exploding for 33 points in the second half.

Woods broke free for a 33-yard touchdown run early in the second half as the Blue Devils began adding to their lead. He help set up two other touchdowns with runs as first-year Cordova head football coach Jimmy Gay earned his first victory.

Woods is the Daily Mountain Eagle’s Offensive Player of the Week.

Defensive Player

Riding a 15-game losing streak, Carbon Hill hasn’t had much to cheer about this season, but the play of linebacker Stevie Simerly has been a bright spot.

The junior registered 25 tackles and recovered a fumble in Friday’s 51-28 loss to Winston County.

Simerly is the Daily Mountain Eagle’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Carbon Hill held a 22-20 lead in the second quarter before Winston County took advantage of several Bulldog miscues to pull away.

Simerly now leads the area with 90 tackles at the midway point of the season.
