Corner tops Oak Grove on last-minute TD

OAK GROVE — Corner connected on a touchdown pass with less than a minute to go to pull out a narrow 21-18 victory over the Oak Grove Tigers on Friday.

Needing a region win to stay in contention in Class 4A, Region 4 play, Corner’s Chase Best connected with Dylan Adamson with the game winning touchdown strike with just 49 seconds left in the game. Hunter Averhart sealed the win with an interception with 26 seconds remaining.

Oak Grove struck first in the game, scoring at the 9:04 mark of the first quarter on a short run. The two-point conversion put the Tigers up 8-0.

Corner scored its first touchdown with 3:16 left in the quarter when Best scored on a two-yard run. Josh Sanford added the extra point to cut the gap to 8-7.

Hunter Doppler put the Yellow Jackets ahead, scoring on a 5-yard run. Averhart added the conversion and Corner led 15-8 in the second quarter.

The score remained the same until the fourth quarter when quarterback Austin Lawrence hit James Patterson on a 23-yard touchdown passs to notch the score at 15-15.

Daniel Murkerson hit a 32-yard field goal to put Oak Grove up 18-15 with 5:06 remaining to set up Corner’s game-winning score.

For Corner (3-3, 2-2), Doppler rushed 20 times for 105 yards and a score, Best completed 10-of-18 passes for 121 yards and a touchdown, Dylan Hand had six catches for 95 yards and Averhart finished with 14 tackles, including three for a loss on defense.

Corner plays at Jemison next week in a key region matchup.
