DORA — Dora coach Johnny Wright’s return to the helm of his team didn’t go as planned, thanks to a rash of turnovers and additional injuries to the already-depleted roster as the Bulldogs fell to the seventh-ranked Bibb County Choctaws, 50-27, at Horace Roberts Field in Dora on Friday.

The Bulldogs would outgain the Choctaws in yardage for the game, 424-351, but were unable to overcome seven turnovers its offense and special teams committed in the contest — mistakes that would cost Dora in points.

Dora’s woes with injuries also continued, with first half injuries to runningbacks Jacob Twilley and Ki’Juna Babbs occurring — adding to the list of playmakers missing from the team.

Darius Davis led the Bulldog offense with 12 rushes for 172 yards and three touchdowns. Kenton Petties also had a good night, with 122 all-purpose yards — rushing for 91 yards on seven carries and a touchdown, while hauling in a pass for 31 yards.

As a team, Dora rushed for 307 yards.

Charles Clay was the top defender for Dora with seven tackles. Aljasha Smoot had a stellar performance defensively — recording six tackles, a quarterback sack, three tackles for a loss and recovering a fumble.

The Choctaws took a 22-0 lead through the first quarter, scoring on drives of 12, 82 and 70 yards.

Bibb County added a touchdown to begin the second quarter on a 58 yard drive to extend the lead to 30-0.

Midway through the quarter, the Bulldogs scored their first points of the game on a 50-yard run by Davis to top a three-play, 64 yard drive, closing the scoring gap to 30-7 — an edge for Bibb County that held through halftime.

The Choctaws scored quickly to begin the third quarter after intercepting a Bulldog pass, driving 19 yards on five plays to further their lead to 36-7.

Following a Dora punt, Bibb County added a score on a 32-yard drive to remain in command, 44-7. Nearing the end of the quarter, the Bulldogs got back on the scoreboard after a 22-yard touchdown run by Petties dropped the Choctaw lead to 21, 44-13.

A fumble recovery by Smoot to begin the fourth quarter led to a three play, 31-yard drive — with Davis taking the ball in from 9 yards out, cutting the score to 44-20.

Bibb County answered back immediately, returning the kickoff 87 yards for the touchdown to retain control, 50-20.

Dora added a final score to their total in the minute three minutes of the game, capping off a six-play, 78 yard drive with a 52-yard run by Davis to reach the 50-27 decision for Bibb County.

The Bulldogs (3-3, 2-2) travels to Oak Grove next week in another Class 4A, Region 4 matchup.
