CARBON HILL — A burglary suspect was shot Monday night and taken by ambulance to a Birmingham hospital.

Sgt. Jason Richardson of the Carbon Hill Police Department said the incident happened between 5 and 6 p.m. Monday on Atkins Road.

“A homeowner had caught a burglary in progress, so when the suspect was trying to flee he actually tried to run over the homeowner, and that’s when shots were fired,” Richardson said.

The male suspect, who was not identified but is about 45 years old, was taken by Regional Paramedical Services to a Birmingham hospital where police officials say he was in stable condition at press time Tuesday night.

The homeowner was not identified.

Richardson said the shooting is still under investigation and will be turned over to the Walker County District Attorney’s Office.
