Corner drubs Sumiton Christian, finishes 5-5

CORNER — Corner’s Dylan Hand would lead Yellow Jackets as they scored early and often and cruised to an easy 49-7 victory.

Corner capped of an 80 yard, 9 play opening drive as Chase Best connected with Hand on a 15 yard score. Cody Stephens added the extra point for an early 7-0 lead.

Sumiton Christian would answer on the ensuing kickoff when DeMonte Hobbs returned the kick 90 yards to the endzone. The point after evened the score at 7-7 with 5:49 left in the first quarter.

On the next set of downs, Best again hooked up with Hand for a 37-yard strike. Stevens converted for a 14-7 lead.

Sumiton Christian took its next possession and drove to the Corner 5-yard line, but a missed field goal thwarted the drive.

Corner struck again in the second quarter, as Chris Huff found a wide open Hand on a 46-yard pass, pushing the lead to 21-7.

The Jackets struck again 1:16 later as Huff again found Hand on a short pass and the senior outraced the defense for his fourth TD of the half and a 28-7 edge.

The Jacket defense got in on the act next as Dylan Adamson picked off an errant Eagle pass and returned it 58 yards for a touchdown.

The final score of the half came on a 3-yard run by Hunter Doppler. Stevens, who was 7-7 on extra points, kicked it to a 42-7 lead at the half.

The only score of the second half came at the 10:51 mark of the fourth quarter as senior Tanner Cose scored on a one-yard run. Doppler added 58 yards rushing and Best and Huff combined for 195 passing yards for Corner.

 Joshua Yates had 90 yards of offense for the Eagles. Corner ends their season at 5-5, while Sumiton Christian finishes at 3-6.
