Look no further than the Pilot Club of Jasper for the organization’s annual holiday ornament that spotlights a noteworthy — and sometimes historic — landmark in Walker County.
In the past, the Pilot Club’s ornaments have included tributes to the pre-1973 Walker High School, the former Boshell Mill in Townley, the old Sherer’s Drive-In and Andrew Posey and Son’s hardware store in Jasper.
This year’s ornament pays tribute to the Walker County Library and the Carl Elliott Regional Library’s bookmobile that took to the streets in 1932. It’s the 12th ornament in the series, said Pilot Club member Gina Nichols.
The library featured in the ornament was located next to the Walker County Courthouse but was destroyed by the tornado that hit Jasper on April 3, 1974.
The ornaments, which are now available from any Pilot Club member, are $20 each. You can also call Nichols at (205) 221-2576 or (205) 221-8076 to purchase an ornament. “These have been extremely popular,” Nichols said. “It’s one of our major fundrasiers for the Pilot Club.”
Nichols said there are still a few of some of the previous ornaments available for sale. “The ones who have the entire collection can’t wait to see what the next one is going to be,” Nichols said.
