George Clay Deavours, 87, of Jasper, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

Funeral services will be today, Nov. 19, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Jasper’s First Baptist Church with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Dr. Dennis Culbreth will officiate. Visitation will be today from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the church.

He was Dean of Instruction at Walker State Technical College (now Bevill State, Sumiton campus) and a member of the Rotary Club. He was a member of Jasper’s First Baptist Church, serving as Sunday School superintendent and chairman of the board of deacons. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Hawaii. He was permanent captain of the 1943 Walker High School outstanding football team. George was very beloved by his relatives and many friends and will be missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his wife, June O’Rear Deavours.

He is survived by his daughter, Denise Howland (Mark) of Birmingham; brother, Joe Deavours of Jasper; sister-in-law, Mary Joy Farris of Jasper; nieces and nephews, Melissa Farris Brisendine, Kathy Farris Derzis, Doug Farris and Joe Farris.
