More than 150 people took part in a Survivor’s Celebration and luncheon Saturday at First United Methodist Church in downtown Jasper.

The luncheon, which included cancer survivors and their friends and family members, was an unofficial kickoff to the Relay for Life - Jasper for 2014. The event was sponsored by the American Cancer Society and several local businesses. The luncheon was catered by Victoria’s Restaurant., and entertainment was provided by The Kool Katz jazz band.

Bryan Knox and Mitzi Nelson of Gardendale First Baptist Church served as guest speakers for the second annual luncheon.

Knox’s wife, Lynda, battled breast cancer before succumbing to the disease earlier this summer. Nelson was diagnosed with breast cancer in June and earlier this week completed chemotherapy treatments.

Both spoke of their personal experiences with cancer — Knox from the standpoint of a caregiver who watched a loved one battle the disease, and Nelson from the standpoint of someone currently battling cancer.
