Agents from the FBI’s North Alabama Safe Streets Task Force arrested Carl Evan Swain, 41, of Jasper, just before 10 a.m. Friday morning.

Swain was arrested near 25th Street West and Second Avenue in Jasper, according to a news release from the FBI.

Swain is charged with murder on a government reservation. The murder allegedly occurred on Fort Stewart Army Base in Fort Stewart, Ga.

Agents from the FBI’s Birmingham office said they could not release specific details on the charges or arrest, other than to say Swain was arrested without incident and was not armed at the time of the arrest. They said the original complaint and affidavit were sealed.

Calls to the FBI’s Atlanta Office, where the charges originated, were unanswered late Friday.

Swain has been in and out of police custody over the last few decades, charged with theft, burglary, domestic violence, aggrevated assault and other charges in Florida.

The agents would not comment on whether or not this arrest was tied to the discovery of a body last Saturday on the military base. That victim, reportedly a 22-year-old soldier, has not been publicly identified because of difficulties locating a next of kin for notification.

No manner of death has been released.
