High School Basketball roundup: Corner tops Carbon Hill in overtime

Carbon  Hill held a four-point lead in overtime, but couldn’t make it stand as the Corner Yellow Jackets edged the Bulldogs 47-46 in Friday’s area matchup.

Corner outscored Carbon Hill 7-6 in the extra frame to earn the win.
The Yellow Jackets had a chance to win the game in regulation, but the team missed a pair of free throws with no time on the clock, forcing overtime.
Carbon Hill (4-3, 0-1) led 13-6 after the first quarter and 21-18 at the half. The game was tied 29-29 after three quarters and 40-40 at the end of regulation. 
Gerald Smith had 20 points for Carbon Hill while Evan Castle added 10, Stevie Simerly had five, Nathan Johnson and Chandler Gann added four and Jordan Henson put in three.
For Corner, Drennen Hutchins had 11 points, Dillon McCaleb put in nine, Dylan Adamson had eight and Dylan Hand put in six. 
Carbon Hill plays at Winfield on Tuesday while Corner hosts Fultondale on Monday.

GIRLS 
Carbon Hill 60, Corner 30
Savanna Lawson knocked down six 3-pointers and scored a career-high 28 points as the Carbon Hill Bulldogs routed Corner 60-30 on Friday night.
As a team, Carbon Hill made 10 3-pointers on the night.
The Bulldogs scored the first 12 points of the game and led 24-13 after the first quarter. Carbon Hill took a 38-21 lead into the half and opened the third quarter with a 19-0 run. The Bulldogs led 57-27 after three quarters.
Caroline Dodd added 19 points and six assists, Abby Tittle had five points and 10 rebounds, Korey Tidwell and Destiny Owens each had four points and Molli Clark had 10 rebounds. 
Carbon Hill’s JV team earned a 36-31 win. Karlye Blackwell had 18 points for the Bulldogs while Cierra Harbin had nine and Hope Tucker added eight.

BOYS
Walker 78, Hayden 61
Walker continued its winning ways on Friday, using a dominating second quarter to take command en route to a 78-61 area win at Hayden.
The Vikings, who have already surpassed last year’s win total, have won five straight games. 
Hayden led 16-15 after the opening quarter, but Walker turned up the defensive pressure in the second quarter to outscore the Wildcats 19-7 for a 34-23 halftime lead. The Vikings (7-1, 1-0) didn’t look back the rest of the way.
“It’s a big win,” first-year Walker coach Rufus McDuffie said. “It’s an area win on the win. Those are always big. They led until we started applying defensive pressure. We were able to get some easy baskets.”
Aaron Morris paced Walker with 24 points while Jonathan McCants had 10 points and eight rebounds. 
Walker hosts Mortimer Jordan in another area contest on Tuesday. It will mark Walker’s second home game of the season.

GIRLS
Hayden 52, Walker 48
Hayden held off Walker for a 52-48 win in the girls game on Friday. 
The Wildcats led 14-9 after the opening quarter and pushed their lead to 26-16 at the half. 
Walker rallied to cut the gap to 38-34 going into the final quarter, but was unable to make up the difference. 
For Walker (3-6, 0-1), Sidney Cooper and Madisyn Hood each had 13 points and Anna Claire Harris put in nine. 
Shannie Johnson added five, Sarah McMillan had four and Carleigh Taylor had two.

BOYS
Curry 62, Vinemont 58
Curry outscored visiting Vinemont 22-11 in the final quarter to make up a seven-point deficit and knock off the Eagles 62-58 on Friday night.
Jarrod Owens led Curry with 19 points while Austin Pruitt knocked down 11-of-13 free throws and finished with 13 points.
Curry trailed 14-12 after the opening quarter, 29-27 at the half and 47-40 after three quarters.
For the Yellow Jackets, Dexter Freeman added nine points, Tyler Fikes and Jaxon Aaron each put in eight while Josh Dugger had three and Garrett Roberts had two.
Curry plays its area opener at Mortimer Jordan on Monday.

GIRLS
Curry 55, Vinemont 20
Ella Banks and Ashlee Swindle combined for 32 points as Curry earned a lopsided 55-20 win over Vinemont.
Curry (2-6) held the Eagles to just three points in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets led 10-3 going into the second quarter and 29-10 at the half. Curry pushed its lead to 45-15 after three quarters.
Banks had 17 points for Curry, Swindle added 15, Kaylee Horton put in eight, Hannah York had five and both Mattie Lopez and Brandy Crawford scored four points.
