Christmas celebrations that were originally scheduled for last weekend in Cordova will be held this Saturday.

The city’s inaugural Tacky Sweater 5K will be held downtown at 9 a.m. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m.

“This is a fellowship event,” said council member Lauren Vance. “While people who are wanting to train are welcome to participate, it’s also for people who just want to come out and have a good day with us.”

Prizes will be awarded for tackiest outfits only.

The 5K was postponed last week because of rain, and there is a chance of showers this weekend as well. However, Vance said inclement weather is not expected to move into the area until the afternoon and should not interfere with the race.

Proceeds from the event will be used to purchase Christmas presents for 17 local children.

Contributions from Cordova Fire and Rescue and the Mayor’s Fund were also used to provide gifts for several students at Cordova Elementary School.

The city’s Christmas parade, which was also postponed last weekend because of the threat of severe weather, will start at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Line-up for floats will be at 5 p.m. at Cordova High School.
