Montgomery – State Rep. Bill Roberts (R-Jasper) earlier this week announced that he will be a candidate for re-election to the House District 13 seat that he won during the 2010 election cycle and cited his desire to continue creating jobs and bringing conservative reforms to state government as the reason for his bid.

“Since Gov. Robert Bentley and the Republican legislature took office in 2010, Alabama has made great strides in the past four years in the areas of education, ethics, and economic development, but there is a great deal of work yet to be done,” Roberts said. “I’m proud of the role I have played in bringing jobs to Walker County and the rest of Alabama, and I hope the citizens of House District 13 will allow me to continue fighting for their interests in Montgomery.”

During the 2012 legislative session, Roberts sponsored and passed landmark legislation that created enhanced incentives needed to attract coal mining projects to Alabama. Shortly after his bill became law, Walter Energy announced its decision to build a $1.2 billion facility that will bring more than 530 high-paying jobs to Alabama, including a barge load-out facility in Walker County.

Walter Energy officials credited Roberts’ bill for the plant’s final location, saying it was critical in the decision whether to locate in Canada or Alabama. The project represents the company’s largest capital outlay in its history.

Prior to his retirement, Roberts was employed as vice president of human resources for CMI International and routinely dealt with companies from around the globe in that role.

From 1972 to 1976, he served as Alabama’s Assistant Commissioner of Labor.

Active in his community, Roberts is a volunteer with the Salvation Army and is a past board member of the American Foundrymen’s Education Association.

Roberts and his wife, Sandra, have one son, David.
