Now that Santa has once again migrated back to the North Pole, shoppers are frequenting local retailers for exchanges, returns and, believe it or not, more shopping.

J.C. Penney’s Tracy Woods, store supervisor, and Amy Welborn, talent resource lead expert, agreed that the store saw more of an influx for after Christmas deals this year than last year.

“Traffic-wise, to me, this year we had more,” Woods said.

“Last year, we didn’t have all the coupons, and this year they’ve brought all those back,” Welborn added. “So, now that we have gotten them, our business has picked up.”

The women said returns and exchanges have been at the normal average for this time of year. However, even though Christmas is over, customers are still taking advantage of the sales. From Dec. 26 until 9 p.m. tonight, an after-Christmas sale is still ongoing at J.C. Penney, but starting Sunday, Dec. 29, until Jan. 1, the store will have an appreciation sale where deals range from 30 to 70 percent off clearance items and 30 to 50 percent off regular sale items.

Kathy Burleson drove from Hamilton Friday and was shopping for some good buys, which she found.

“We had some returns to bring back and [are] looking for more bargains, after-Christmas bargains,” Burleson said about herself and her mother. “We have enjoyed ourselves today. We waited until today. We’re going to hit it today and tomorrow.”

Besides clothing, shoes and other accessories, a large amount of Christmas merchandise is on sale at the Belk department store. Lindsy Plunkett, a department manager at Belk, said the traffic in her store has been a “very steady flow.”

“A lot of Christmas stuff has been bought out in the home decor department,” Plunkett said. “All Christmas decor is 75 percent off. That’s one of the really good deals going on right now.”

Currently, Belk has a red dot sale going on until 1 p.m. today with 75 to 85 percent off clearance items and an additional 10 percent off coupon. Some regular sale items will remain full price while some may have 25 up to 75 percent off, which is not on clearance. Belk will have a New Year’s sale starting Sunday, Dec. 29 until Jan. 1.

Additional hours were added leading up to Christmas Day, but both stores have returned to their regular hours of operation — Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sundays from noon until 6 p.m. at J.C. Penney; Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. at Belk.

After-Christmas specials catch the attention of experienced shoppers, but both stores agreed that they saw more patrons before the holiday rather than afterward.
