George Gregory Stewart, 61, of Tuscaloosa, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at his residence.

Visitation will be Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, from 10 until 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa. Dr. Gil McKee will officiate. A luncheon will follow the services at the church. Burial will be in the New Oak Grove Baptist Cemetery.

Capt. George Gregory Stewart graduated from Wentworth Military Academy and went on to serve as an officer in the United States Army for many years, including the Special Forces Green Beret, Seventh Group. He was a loving, giving, gentle spirit that “never met a stranger.” He will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Frances and Violet Faye Stewart; and brother, John Virgil Stewart.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Mary Allean O’Mary Stewart; daughters, Jessica Stewart McGaul and Hilary Jeanette Stewart DeMint; seven grandchildren; stepson, Christopher Lee McCormick; stepdaughter, Mary Melissa McCormick Erasmus; four stepgrandchildren; sisters, Sheila Faye Ruhter and Lota Ann Jakobe; and brother, Michael Andrew Stewart.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the “Wounded Warrior Project.”
