Etha Woods Brasfield peacefully passed away on January 7, 2014. Etha was born on April 16, 1920, in Coal Valley to the late James Lucious Woods and Ozella Sherrer Woods. She was a graduate of Oakman High School and Livingston State College, currently the University of West Alabama. After receiving her BS degree in education, Etha began her elementary teaching career in Aldridge, and continued teaching the third grade for 25 years in Parrish. She loved children and children gravitated to her. In 1976, Etha retired with 33 years of devoted service. Remaining active in education, she was a member of the Walker County Retired Teachers Association and Alpha Delta Kappa teacher’s sorority.

Etha was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 42 years, Albert Brasfield. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, John Woods, Penn Woods, Paul Woods and James Woods of Jasper; four sisters, Florine Stough of Dothan, Kathleen Busby of Jasper, Gladys Partrich of Gardendale and Mary McDowell of Brandon, Miss.; and her infant granddaughter, Elizabeth Ruth Bevill.

Etha is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Gladys and Simmes Bevill; three grandchildren and their families: Al Bevill, wife Andrea and children, Olivia, Will and Mary Catherine; Mitchell Bevill, wife Barbara and children, James and Andrew; Symmone Harris and children, Isabella and Collin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Etha was a faithful member of Jasper First Baptist Church and after moving to Gardendale, a devout member of Gardendale First Baptist Church. She was dedicated to the “Welcome” Sunday School Class and the Wednesday Morning Bible Study. Etha will not only be missed by her loving family, but also her wonderful neighborhood friends of Church Street Circle, and residents and staff of Covenant Place.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at The New Gardendale Funeral Home in Gardendale at 11 a.m., with the family receiving visitors from 10 until 11 a.m. Rev. Mark Harrison will be officiating with special remarks from Paul Roberts.

A graveside service will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Jasper at 2 p.m.
