High School Basketball: Walker tops century-mark in rout of Curry

Walker could do no wrong Friday night.

The Vikings scored the first 38 points of the game, shot 70 percent from the field and topped the century mark for the first time under head coach Rufus McDuffie in a 102-18 rout of Curry at Songer Gym.

Walker knocked down 16 3-pointers, only missed four shots inside the arc and scored at least 27 points in each of the first three quarters.

The Vikings led 32-0 after the first quarter and added another six points before Curry’s Dexter Freeman finally broke through for the Yellow Jackets at the six-minute mark of the second quarter to make the score 38-2.

Walker scored 28 points in the second quarter and took a 60-9 lead into the half.

The Vikings, who entered the game on a five-game losing streak, remained unstoppable in the third quarter, posting 27 points for an 87-15 lead after three quarters.

Walker was 24-of-28 from the floor on 2-point shots and 16-of-29 on 3-pointers.

Eleven players scored points for Walker led by Ja’Ray McElrath’s 21 points.

Kenyatta Woods and Dawson Salors each put in 15 points, Jonathan McCants added 10, Brandon Thursby had eight, Marlon Oliver and Aaron Morris each had seven, Matthew McKay and Michael Bridges both had six, Riley Graham had five points and Isaiah Cox added two.

On the other end, Curry made seven shots and committed 30 turnovers.

Freeman had six points for Curry, Jaxon Aaron added four, John Simmons had three, Tyler Fikes and Austin Pruitt each had two and Joshua Duggar put in one point.

With the win, Walker (11-7 overall, 4-0 in Class 5A, Area 14) stayed on track for the regular season area title. The Vikings have area games against Mortimer Jordan and Hayden remaining on the schedule.

Walker looks to move to 5-0 in area play on Tuesday with a home game against Hayden.

Walker’s game at Mortimer Jordan has been moved to Thursday. The game was originally scheduled for  Tuesday, but was postponed due to a power outage.

Curry (2-14) plays at Dora on Friday.

GIRLS

Walker 62, Curry 32

Walker jumped out to an insurmountable lead after the opening quarter and pulled away from there, knocking off the Yellow Jackets 62-32 on Friday.

The Vikings were up 19-5 after the first quarter and pushed their lead to 43-12 at the half.

Ten players scored for Walker in the game. Mary Kate Harrell was 7-of-8 from the field with 16 points, both Anna Claire Harris and Savannah McMillon each had seven while Sidney Cooper and Carleigh Taylor each added six.

Walker took a 58-28 lead into the final quarter.

For Curry, Ashlee Swindle had 15 points while Ella Banks had six.

Walker made it a perfect sweep on the day.

Walker’s JV boys won 59-20. For Walker, Jonah Morgan led the way with 14 points while Jarrod Ollie had 11 points and Myron Mitchell put in nine.

Walker’s JV girls won 28-16.

For Walker, Alexa Waid had 12 points and Jayla Locket had six. For Curry, Katie Downs had seven points.

The Vikings won the 9th-grade boys game 72-6. Richard Griffin had 20 points for Walker while Marquis Williams added 17.
