Relay for Life of Walker County will host the kickoff for their annual campaign for Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society Tuesday night at the Woodland Trace Church of Christ, beginning at 6 p.m.

Organizer Becky Rigsby said the kickoff is open to anyone interested in participating in this year’s event.

“The purpose is just to kick off the 2014 Relay season and get teams motivated to start fundraising,” Rigsby said.

Tuesday will be an opportunity for established teams, those looking to form new teams and individuals to discuss upcoming events, fundraising ideas and strategies and registering survivors.

As part of the Relay for Life event, cancer survivors in the community are honored at a survivor’s dinner the night before the walk and with a special survivor’s lap at the event. They also receive a purple T-shirt designating them as a survivor.

There will also be a chili and soup cookoff among the committee members on Tuesday with attendees as the judges.

For more information, contact Rigsby at 205-388-0150. Survivors wishing to register for the event should contact Gwinna Boyd at 205-302-2342.

Relay for Life will be held at the Walker High School walking track from May 16 at 6 p.m. to May 17 at 6 a.m.
