They also voted to uphold the mayor’s temporary appointment of Chad Gurganus as acting police chief.
The council also discussed making sure a member of the council or the town’s magistrate was available to inspect the civic center after every rental.
The civic center has long been an issue for the council, with renters often not cleaning up after themselves or breaking chairs and tables during the rental.
Implementing these inspections means those people would no longer be eligible to have their deposit returned.
The council conducted the largest portion of the meeting in hushed tones at the council table, holding discussions with Gurganus, Fire Chief Shane Calloway and Magistrate Joseph Thomas out of the hearing of those in attendance.
Alabama’s Open Meetings Act requires that all discussions of an elected governmental body be conducted in public, unless they meet the requirements for an executive session.
