Unlike several of the classic matches between the two teams last year, the Tornadoes went to their high-speed offensive and defensive attack — leaving the Red Raiders with no answers as they suffered from long scoring droughts.
Parrish, meanwhile, had few problems finding the basket — with Barry Hill’s double-double effort of 14 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots leading the team. Trayvon Chatman followed with 12 points, while Jermichael Harris scored 11 points and Denzell Daley had 10 points. Isaac Chatman added 10 rebounds and three blocked shots in a great defensive effort.
The Tornadoes established the lead in the first period following a 13-7 run, then held the Red Raiders to just five second-period points while adding 22 to their total for a 35-12 halftime advantage.
Parrish continued to dominate both sides of the ball in the third period, leading to an 18-9 run for the 53-21 edge. The Tornadoes closed the game with a 12-5 fourth period effort en route to the 65-26 win.
The Tornadoes host the Carbon Hill Bulldogs tonight at 7 p.m.
Parrish 52, Marion County 42
The Parrish Tornadoes picked up a key area win over the Marion County Red Raiders, 52-42, on Friday at Parrish.
Ciara Thomas led Parrish with 14 points, while Mary Jo Sanford and Mekya Hill each scored eight points.
The Tornadoes took command of the game in the first period following a 15-6 run, then outscored the Red Raiders 13-10 in the second period for the 28-16 lead at the half.
Marion County cut Parrish’s lead to five in the third period, 42-37, but the Tornadoes responded with a 15-10 fourth period run for the 52-42 win.
Carbon Hill 46, Corner 39
The Carbon Bulldogs (12-9) secured a critical victory over area rival Corner on Friday night, beating the Yellow Jackets 46-39 at Carbon Hill High School.
Gerald Smith had a great game for the Bulldogs, scoring 28 points to lead the team.
The team’s opened the game tied at 8-8 at the end of the first period, with the Bulldogs taking command, 21-13 at halftime.
Corner pulled within three points thanks to a 13-8 run in the third period, but Carbon Hill went on a 15-13 fourth period run to help clinch the 46-39 victory.
The Bulldogs take on the Parrish Tornadoes tonight at Parrish.
Carbon Hill 53, Corner 38
Caroline Dodd had 38 points as the Carbon Hill girls picked up a 53-38 area victory over Corner at home Friday night.
Carbon Hill (14-8, 6-0) led throughout the game.
The Bulldogs were up 12-6 after one quarter, 25-19 at the half and 37-28 after three quarters.
For the Bulldogs, Abby Tittle added seven points, 11 rebounds and nine assists while Savanna Lawson, Katie Moore and Korey Tidwell each had two points.
Carbon Hill plays at Parrish beginning at 6 p.m. today.
Dora 67, Curry 35
Dora bounced back from an ugly loss to Cullman with a rout of Curry Friday night at Dora High School.
The Bulldogs closed the first quarter with a 12-2 run for a nine-point lead and never looked back, beating the Yellow Jackets 67-35.
Ten different Dora players scored in the game, lead by Kelan Bell with 12 points and Tyreke Bell with 10. Darian Ramsey and Charles Clay each had nine points and Kenton Petties put in seven.
Dora led 14-5 after the first quarter and 34-11 at the half. Curry trailed 54-20 after three quarters.
Dora (17-5) will play again in the Walker County Tournament at Cordova High School next week.
Curry 56, Dora 29
Curry’s Ella Banks knocked down four 3-pointers and had 17 points in the third quarter alone as the Yellow Jackets earned a lopsided 56-29 road win at Dora on Friday night.
Banks finished with a game-high 21 points.
Curry led 12-7 after the opening quarter and 23-12 at the half. Curry outscored Dora 21-6 in the third quarter to take a commanding 44-18 lead into the fourth quarter.
For Curry, Kaylee Horton had 12 points, Ashlee Swindle had nine and Taylor Rowe added six.
Dora’s Madison Clayton had nine points and both Lindsey Johnson and Hannah Wilson scored five points.
