CORDOVA — The opening day of the Walker County Basketball Tournament went as planned on Monday with the high seeds earning easy victories.

Carbon Hill, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, and Oakman, the No. 4 seed, cruised from start to finish. Carbon Hill defeated Cordova by 20 points while Oakman picked up a lopsided 26-point win over Curry.

Carbon Hill and Oakman will both be in action again on Friday while Monday’s losers play games today.

(3) Carbon Hill 66, (6) Cordova 46

The third-seed Carbon Hill Bulldogs opened the tournament with a bang, beating the hosting No. 6 seed Cordova Blue Devils 66-46.

Gerald Smith had a stellar performance with 22 points to lead Carbon Hill, with Chandler Gann following with a 20-point effort.

Nathan Johnson had 13 points and eight rebounds, while Stevie Simerly scored 10 points and had six rebounds.

Cordova’s Jonathan Softley had a great night for the Blue Devils, scoring 19 points and securing eight rebounds.

The Bulldogs took firm command of the game in the first period, opening with a 20-0 run before two 3-point shots by Softley gave Carbon Hill the 20-6 advantage.

Carbon Hill (13-10) added another four points to its lead following a 15-10 run to remain ahead 35-16 at halftime.

The Bulldogs secured a 20-point edge in the third period by winning the 22-21 scoring battle for the 57-37 lead.

The Blue Devils (1-21) outscored the Bulldogs 11-10 in the fourth period, but the final decision went to Carbon Hill, 67-46. Carbon Hill battles the second-seed Dora Bulldogs on Friday, while Cordova battles Dora today.

(4) Oakman 72, (5) Curry 46

The No. 4 seed Oakman Wildcats Boys had three players score in double digits in a 72-46 rout over the fifth-seed Curry Yellow Jackets on Monday.

Purvis Coger and Ashton Gay both scored 14 points to lead Oakman, while Quinton Harris had 13 points.

Tyler Fikes led Curry (2-17) with 14 points, with Austin Pruitt contributing 13 points.

The first period saw both teams shuffle their rosters frequently due to a total of 21 fouls being committed, with Oakman taking an early 23-14 advantage.

The fouls continued to plague both teams throughout the second period, though Oakman was able to mount an 18-16 run and take a 41-30 lead into halftime.

The Wildcats (12-11) extended their lead in the third period to 19 after a 15-7 run to remain in command, 56-37.

Oakman outscored Curry 16-9 in the fourth period to clinch the 72-46 victory.

Both teams will battle the No. 1 seed Parrish Tornadoes next — with Curry battling Parrish today, while Oakman squares off with the Tornadoes on Friday.
