A missing Warrior man’s body was found in Walker County Wednesday morning.

Walker County Sheriff’s deputies began looking for Michael Louis McAvoy, 36, Tuesday afternoon after his family filed a missing person report.

McAvoy was reportedly last seen Saturday by a family friend. McAvoy’s vehicle was found on land owned by his uncle off Old Baltimore Road near Cordova late Tuesday.

Deputies searched the area on foot and had local pilot Joey Sanders fly over the area to look for McAvoy. As darkness fell, deputies called off the search but resumed efforts Wednesday morning.

Investigator Randy Sanford said it appeared McAvoy took a small boat that was on the property to the other side of a pond. The canoe and body were found at that location Wednesday morning between 10:30 and 11 a.m.

Coroner J.C. Poe said McAvoy appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound but the body was being sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science in Huntsville for an autopsy.

Foul play is not suspected in the death, but law enforcement could not confirm the gunshot was self-inflicted, pending the results of an autopsy.
